Ottawa, Ontario – Ian Millar of Perth, ON, proved why he is a nine-time Olympian, taking first and second in the $75,000 CSI2* Brookstreet Grand Prix to end the National Capital Show Jumping Tournaments’ two-week run at the Nepean National Equestrian Park in Ottawa, ON.

Heavy rains moved through the area just prior to the competition on Sunday, August 21.  As a result, seven riders elected not to start their horses on the grass field.  Of the 16 that attempted the demanding track set by two-time Olympic course designer Leopoldo Palacios of Venezuela, only three horses jumped clear.  Fortunately for Millar, two of those horses belonged to him.

Only the second rider on course, Millar produced the first clear round with Dryden, a 10-year-old Belgian Warmblood stallion owned by Susan and Ariel Grange that Millar had ridden to victory in last year’s edition of the Brookstreet Grand Prix.  Sarah Johnstone of Aurora, ON, then guided Leonidas, a 14-year-old Hannoverian gelding owned by Trish Crang, home fault-free to guarantee a jump-off for the large crowd that had braved the weather to witness world-class show jumping.  The final horse on course, Star Power, a 10-year-old Dutch-bred horse owned by Team Works, also jumped clear, giving Millar two shots at the title.

The veteran faced off against the rookie, with the 64-year-old Olympic silver medalist taking on the 20-year-old newcomer to international competition.  Millar was the first rider to tackle the shortened jump-off track, producing another clear round with Dryden in a time of 55.46 seconds to put the pressure firmly on Johnstone’s shoulders.  Although they shaved more than four full seconds off of Millar’s time, Johnstone and Leonidas dropped a rail at the third fence, ensuring that Millar would successfully defend his title.  The only question that remained was with which horse.

Millar returned to the ring with Star Power, a horse he has been riding for the past year and a half.  Once again, all the rails stayed in place as Millar sailed around the course on Star Power, galloping through the timers in 54.90 seconds to take the victory.

“I might have had some difficulty if Sarah hadn’t faulted because her horse is faster than my two at this stage,” said Millar, who pocketed $39,000 when the $75,000 in prize money was distributed among the top 12 finishers.

In fact, Johnstone and Leonidas had beaten Millar and Dryden twice during this year’s National Capital Show Jumping Tournaments.  In both the $10,000 Modified Grand Prix on Saturday, August 13, and the $25,000 Hayes Co. Grand Prix on Sunday, August 14, Johnstone emerged the winner while Millar settled for second.

“He got his revenge today,” said Johnstone ruefully.  “I wanted to be clean and efficient.  I cut the corner a little too much and it cost me the rail.  ‘Leo’ has been phenomenal; he tried his heart out.”

Both riders agreed that the weather played a role in the competition, but unanimously praised the grass grand prix field for holding up to the rain.

“The footing was good enough for sure, although it was a factor in the competition,” said Millar.  “A lot of venues couldn’t take that rain, but this field is so state-of-the-art that it is able to handle it.”

While Johnstone is heading to the University of Guelph this fall, Millar is looking ahead to the 2011 Pan American Games taking place in October in Guadalajara, Mexico.  Star Power would be his top choice for Mexico, should Millar be named to the Canadian Equestrian Team by the selection committee.

It is also possible that Millar could find himself riding alongside one of his children at either this year’s Pan American Games or next year’s Olympics.  His daughter, Amy, 34, had four faults riding Top Gun in the $75,000 Brookstreet Grand Prix to place fourth while Jonathon, 36, had one rail plus a time fault to finish sixth with Cantero Z.  Canadian Equestrian Team veteran Hugh Graham, 62, of Schomberg, ON, placed fifth with four faults riding Distant Star 3E for owner and breeder, KingRidge Stables.

The National Capital Show Jumping Tournaments took place from August 10 to 14 and August 17 to 21 at the Nepean National Equestrian Park in the heart of Ottawa.  The $75,000 Brookstreet Grand Prix was sanctioned as a CSI2* competition by the International Equestrian Federation (FEI).

Roberto Teran Dominates Derby at National Capital Show Jumping Tournaments

Ottawa, Ontario – Colombia’s Roberto Teran dominated at the National Capital Show Jumping Tournaments, taking four out of the top nine spots in the $10,000 ATCO Jumping Derby held Saturday, August 20, at the Nepean National Equestrian Park in Ottawa, ON.

In the ultimate test of fitness and bravery, only 10 horses managed to finish the course set by Leopoldo Palacios of Venezuela. Nine horses were eliminated at the stone wall, which required horses to negotiate their way down a hill before jumping off over a stone wall. Two riders - nine-time Canadian Olympian Ian Millar, 64, of Perth, ON, riding Dryden and eventual winner Teran, on a different horse, Galina 177, managed to continue and successfully complete the course after having a refusal at the wall.

Teran increased his chances for victory by entering four horses in the $10,000 ATCO Jumping Derby. On his third attempt around the track riding Vortex, Teran left all the rails in place but exceeded the 129-second time allowed for one time fault. It proved to the best score of the day, giving Teran the victory without a jump-off.

“It is a very long course and the horses start getting tired at the end, but with riders Ian Millar and Jay Hayes competing, I am a little surprised that we didn’t get a clear round,” said Teran, 34, who has been based in Schomberg, ON, for the past eight years and continues to represent his native Colombia in international competition. “After I went with my first horse, I knew it was going to be tough to get a clear. Even if you managed to jump clear, the time was tight, as we have come to expect from Leopoldo.”

The two-time Olympic course designer was happy with the result.

“Winning with one time fault is perfect,” said Palacios, 64, who was the course designer at the 2000 Sydney Olympics as well as the 2008 Beijing Olympics. “Here at this Park, you have all of the natural obstacles. You should use them. We have big crowds and television coverage here today; they love the derby. The derby is to test the bravery of the horses; the riders need to show that their horses are fit and well-trained.”

Teran confirmed Palacios’ assessment when asked what the secret was to jumping the wall by saying, “That wall, if you have trained it, is a very simple jump. If you haven’t, it looks like quite a drop for the horses, and they think it is scary. Leopoldo added an extra element of difficulty by putting a rail there as well. The rider starts thinking about it, worrying that they are going to have trouble, and the horses feel their tension and become scared.”

Teran began riding his winning mount, Vortex, a nine-year-old Dutch Warmblood mare owned by Ashlyn Trevelyan, earlier this year. In July, they enjoyed top three placings at competitions in Blainville and Bromont, both in Quebec, before taking their first win in the $10,000 ATCO Jumping Derby.

Runner-up Hayley Mackinnon of Stittsville, ON, was only the second rider on course, guiding Class Action to a five-fault round after having a rail down in the dreaded devil’s dyke and incurring one time fault.

Ryan Roy of King City, ON, placed third after having one rail down at fence 13, and picking up two time faults with Limbo 124. Olympic team silver medalist Millar riding Dryden did not touch a rail, but placed fourth with eight faults after counting his refusal at the wall and four time faults.

Teran slotted into fifth position with 12 faults incurred with Cheptel Gaston, a horse Teran was riding for only the second time. The horse is usually ridden by Teran’s student, Miguel Elizagaray of Argentina, who was unable to make it to the National Capital Show Jumping Tournaments. Teran also took sixth place with Sioux de Ambar Z, a horse that is only seven years old, and ninth with Galina 177, a horse that owner Mark Hayes imported from Belgium seven weeks ago.

Teran and Hayes operate a training business together, based at the stables of Olympic Champion Eric Lamaze in Schomberg, ON.

The two-week National Capital Show Jumping Tournaments concludes with Sunday’s $75,000 CSI** Brookstreet Grand Prix, sanctioned by the International Equestrian Federation (FEI), at approximately 2 p.m.

More than 500 horses will compete over the two weeks of competition at the Nepean National Equestrian Park, conveniently located at the 417 Queensway and Moodie Drive. For more information on the National Capital Show Jumping Tournament, please visit www.hayesco.ca.

Lucky Friday as Jordan MacPherson Wins Again in Ottawa
“Jordan MacPherson of Toronto, ON, won the $10,000 Ottawa Rental and Supply Ltd. Open Welcome on Friday, August 19, at the National Capital Show Jumping Tournaments in Ottawa, ON.”

Ottawa, Ontario – For the second Friday in a row, 21-year-old Jordan MacPherson of Toronto, ON, was the big winner at the National Capital Show Jumping Tournaments taking place at the Nepean National Equestrian Park in Ottawa, ON.

MacPherson and Piccobello topped a 15-horse jump-off for victory in the $10,000 Ottawa Rental and Supply Ltd. Open Welcome, adding to their victory a week earlier in the $10,000 NationWide Open Welcome.

Two-time Olympic course designer Leopoldo Palacios of Venezuela set an inviting track on the grass grand prix field for the 32 horses entered in the $10,000 Ottawa Rental and Supply Ltd. Open Welcome. A total of 15 horses jumped clear to advance to the all-deciding jump-off round.

It took until the tenth horse in the jump-off before the crowd was treated to a clear round. Hugh Graham of Schomberg, ON, guided Distant Star 3E home in a time of 40.82 seconds to move to the top of the leader board. Lauren Hunkin of Kemptville, ON, followed and had the home crowd cheering when she jumped clear with Larry 0146, but her time of 41.38 seconds was not fast enough to catch Graham.

Angela Covert-Lawrence of St. Lazare, QC, also produced a clear round riding Utan, but a time of 42.71 seconds eventually left the pair in fifth place.

Graham had a second shot at the title with Executive Privilege 3E. The 62-year-old Canadian Equestrian Team veteran was clear yet again, this time in a fast 39.85 seconds, to put Executive Privilege 3E’s name at the top of the scoreboard for owner and breeder, KingRidge Stables.

There was still one rider left to challenge, and that was last week’s winner, Jordan MacPherson. Remaining calm and cool, the third year university student guided Piccobello around the shortened jump-off track, shaving more than a full second off the leading time to stop the clock in 38.42 seconds. As last week’s victory marked the biggest win of MacPherson’s young career, she now has two big wins to her credit.

“I think it is pretty exciting!” said MacPherson, who earned the winner’s share of $3,000.

MacPherson compared last week’s win, when she was the first rider back for the jump-off, to this week’s victory, where she was the final rider to challenge.

“It was definitely more nerve-racking than going first,” said MacPherson. “There is more to lose going last. Knowing Hugh was in first and second in the standings was a little intimidating. I wasn’t thinking about catching his time, I was just thinking, ‘clean round.’ She’s a fast horse.”

Praising the 12-year-old Belgian Warmblood mare that she began riding in November, MacPherson said, “She was great, again. She’s amazing!”

MacPherson has trained with nine-time Canadian Olympian Ian Millar and his children, Jonathon and Amy, at Millar Brooke Farm in Perth, ON, for the past three years. MacPherson beat one of her coaches, Jonathon Millar, 36, for last week’s victory.

The National Capital Show Jumping Tournaments is in its second and final week at the Nepean National Equestrian Park. Running August 17 to 21, the second week of competition sees two-time Olympic course designer Leopoldo Palacios of Venezuela setting the tracks in the grand prix field. Competition highlights include the thrilling $10,000 ATCO Jumping Derby on Saturday, August 20, followed by the $5,000 Hunter Derby. The grand finale is Sunday’s $75,000 CSI** Brookstreet Grand Prix, sanctioned by the International Equestrian Federation (FEI). Both events begin at approximately 2 p.m.

More than 500 horses will compete over the two weeks of competition at the Nepean National Equestrian Park, conveniently located at the 417 Queensway and Moodie Drive.

Ottawa, Ontario – Elizabeth Gingras and Kilimanjaro climbed to the top of the Talent Squad competition held Thursday, August 18, at the National Capital Show Jumping Tournaments at the Nepean National Equestrian Park in Ottawa, ON.

Gingras of Edmonton, AB, and Kilimanjaro were one of three horse-rider combinations to jump clear over the challenging track set by two-time Olympic course designer Leopoldo Palacios of Venezuela. First back in the jump-off, Gingras and Kilimanjaro, a 12-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding, again jumped clear in a time of 49.97 seconds to put pressure on the two riders that followed.

Margie Gayford of Sharon, ON, was the next rider on the grand prix field with Calando Z, an 11-year-old Zangersheide gelding owned by Paddy Ann Burns. The pair had the last fence down on course, stopping the clock in 50.19 seconds to eventually finish third.

Sarah Johnstone of Aurora, ON, was the final competitor in the jump-off. She and Leonidas have been hot favourites at this year’s National Capital Show Jumping Tournaments, winning the $10,000 Modified Grand Prix on Saturday, August 13, and the $25,000 Hayes Co. Grand Prix on Sunday, August 14. Johnstone guided Leonidas, a 14-year-old Hannoverian gelding owned by Trish Crang, through the course in 49.93 seconds, the fastest time of the day. However, another win was not in the cards as the pair had the first fence down to finish second while Gingras scored the victory with Kilimanjaro.

“He was amazing, absolutely amazing,” said Gingras of the horse owned by Kathryn Lefebvre of Stittsville, ON. “He jumped his heart out in both rounds. He always tries his hardest, and today it really paid off.”

Gingras has only been riding Kilimanjaro for a few short months.

“He’s for sale and his owner needed someone to get him into the ring,” explained Gingras. “I get along really well with the horse and I’m always game to ride anything, especially if it helps me improve my own riding.”

The 29-year-old has been training with 2008 Olympic team silver medalist Jill Henselwood for the past two years. Despite living in Edmonton where she works as a riding instructor, Gingras keeps her own horses at Henselwood’s Juniper Farms in Oxford Mills, ON.

“It’s certainly a very long commute,” laughed Gingras, who meets her coach at competitions. “I love Jill so much and I really respect her. Her own results speak for themselves and I am very grateful to have such a wonderful person on my side. It makes me want to hop on a plane and fly out here more often.”

Gingras won’t be competing during the rest of the National Capital Tournaments. In fact, she won’t even be in the province.

“I fly back to Alberta on Friday,” she explained. “I competed here last week, then flew back to Alberta for Monday and Tuesday and was back here to compete today. I would have loved to stay for the rest of the week after this win, but I have students competing at a show in Calgary and I really need to be there. Not to mention that it will be great to see my husband!”

The newlywed tied the knot in May and has spent less than a week with her new husband since then.

“He knew I was horse crazy when he met me,” she said. “He knows it’s my passion and that I would be very depressed if I wasn’t riding so he told me right from the start ‘go for it, I’ll support you.’ I have been very lucky to have the kind of support I do, both from him and from my parents.”

Other winners on Thursday included Francois Lamontagne of St. Eustache, QC, who won the 1.35m competition riding Unik Circa while Jeff Brandmaier won the Seven and Eight-Year-Old Young Horse competition aboard Damiro van ter Notelaere, a Belgian-bred gelding owned by Knightwood Stables of Guelph, ON.

The National Capital Show Jumping Tournaments is in its second and final week at the Nepean National Equestrian Park. Running August 17 to 21, the second week of competition sees two-time Olympic course designer Leopoldo Palacios of Venezuela setting the tracks in the grand prix field. Competition highlights include the $10,000 Ottawa Rental & Supply Ltd. Open Welcome on Friday, August 19, and the thrilling $10,000 ATCO Jumping Derby on Saturday, August 20. Young Horses Featured at National Capital Show Jumping Tournaments

Ottawa, Ontario – Jay Hayes guided Riva to victory as young horses were showcased at the National Capital Show Jumping Tournaments running at the Nepean National Equestrian Park in Ottawa, ON.

Of the three horses to advance to the jump-off in the Seven and Eight-Year-Old Young Horse competition, Riva jumped clear in the fastest time, 41.90 seconds, to take the win.  Owned by Summerhill Farm, seven-year-old Riva carries impressive bloodlines.  Her sire is Rio Grande, Eric Lamaze’s former grand prix mount, while her mother is Diva, ridden by Hayes at the 2000 Sydney Olympics.  With two international show jumping horses as parents, Hayes has similar hopes for Riva.

“She’s really coming along nicely; she’s exactly like her mother,” said Hayes, who is a two-time Canadian Olympian as well as the organizer of the National Capital Show Jumping Tournaments.  “We’re going to make her into the best horse she can be.  I truly believe she has grand prix potential and hopefully someday we will be able to represent Canada.”

Jeff Brandmaier placed second after stopping the clock in 43.91 seconds riding Damiro van ter Notelaere, a Belgian-bred gelding owned by Knightwood Stables of Guelph, ON.  Four faults in the jump-off meant a third place finish for Greg Kuti of Schomberg, ON, and Argento, bred in Canada by KingRidge Stables and now owned by Chor-Be Farm of Schomberg, ON.

Jonathon Millar of Perth, ON, guided Alazan to victory in the Six-Year-Old Young Horse competition.  The pair put in the only double clear performance of the class to secure the win.  Alazan was bred by Janice Baikie of Arva, ON, and is owned by Millar Brooke Farm of Perth, ON.

“He has such a fighting character,” said Millar, son of nine-time Olympian, Ian Millar.  “It’s great when the horse goes into the ring and wants to do as well or better than you do.”

Millar recognizes the importance of bringing along Canada’s next group of potential grand prix horses.

“It’s really important to take things slowly with them,” explained the 36-year-old Canadian Equestrian Team member.  “You have to be very mindful of their maturity, both mentally and physically.  You have to open every door you can to keep developing these young horses.  Great horses don’t just grow on trees; they have to be brought along carefully.”

Paul Halpern of St. Lazare, QC, rode Empire 181 to a second place finish for owner Wynbrook Farm of Vars, ON.

In the Five-Year-Old Young Horse competition, Johan Letimonier topped a four-horse jump-off riding the French-bred Selma de la Batia for owner DK Masterson Holdings.

“It was great for her to have a win,” said Letimonier, who is the son-in-law of Jay Hayes.  “She’s still green so to do the jump-off at this height of fence and still perform as well as she did, that says a lot.  This is only her third show so that shows you how special this horse is.”

Letimonier will continue to compete with Selma de la Batia in the young horse divisions before turning the reins over to Amy Masterson.

“I think it’s even more nerve-racking watching someone else ride her than competing myself,” said Masterson, 16.  “I am really hoping to be able to start riding her this winter, but for sure I will be on her before the end of the 2012 show season.”

Millar’s younger sister, Amy Millar, placed second riding Fine Time M.  Bred by Millar Brooke Farm of Perth, ON, Fine Time M is owned in partnership with Ann Mathews.  Finishing third was Robert Krcmar of Mississauga, ON, riding the German-bred La Fleur for owner Jacqueline Wickens of Port Credit, ON.

The grand finale is Sunday’s $75,000 CSI** Brookstreet Grand Prix, sanctioned by the International Equestrian Federation (FEI).

Ottawa, Ontario – For the second day in a row, Sarah Johnstone and Leonidas were the big winners at the National Capital Show Jumping Tournaments. The pair captured the $25,000 Hayes Co. Grand Prix on Sunday, August 14, at the Nepean National Equestrian Park in Ottawa, ON.

Hot off Saturday’s victory in the $10,000 Peel Maryborough Mutual Insurance Company/Henry Equestrian Insurance Brokers Ltd. Modified Grand Prix, Johnstone of Aurora, ON, and Leonidas returned to the grass grand prix field where they faced off against 15 other horse-rider combinations.Five jumped clear over Catsy Cruz’s course to advance to the all-deciding jump-off round.

First back, Margie Gayford of Sharon, ON, went slow and steady, guiding Calando Z, an 11-year-old Zangersheide gelding owned by Paddy Ann Burns, to a clear round in a time of 49.89 seconds.

Toronto’s Jordan MacPherson, 21, attempted to repeat her winning performance from Friday’s $10,000 NationWide Open Welcome with Piccobello, but three rails down left her fifth in the final standings.

Angela Covert-Lawrence of St. Lazare, QC, and Utan, a 10-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding owned by The Eastwood Group, had a rail down mid-way through the jump-off course before crossing the timers in 46.99 seconds. They finished fourth overall. Covert-Lawrence rode two horses in the Grand Prix, and also placed eighth riding Unica after having the final fence down in the first round.

Saturday’s big winners returned to the ring in the hopes of another victory.Johnstone and Leonidas repeated their faultless performance and posted a time of 43.09 to move into the lead with only one rider left to challenge.

That final challenger, however, was nine-time Olympian Ian Millar of Perth, ON.The 64-year-old veteran set out to beat 20-year-old Johnstone.A hard rub at the second last fence had the crowd gasping, but the rail stayed in place as Millar guided Dryden, a 10-year-old Belgian Warmblood stallion owned by Susan Grange, home with a clear round. The time was close, but not fast enough, as 43.19 seconds left Millar and Dryden in second place for the second day in a row.

And for the second day in a row, Johnstone and Leonidas took the win.

“It was awesome, he was unbelievable,” said Johnstone, who has never won two major competitions back-to-back, let alone with the same horse.“You know you have to keep the rails up with Ian coming behind you.‘Leo’ was on his game, and I felt confident.I had to go for it.”

Johnstone, who trains with National Capital Show Jumping Tournament organizer Jay Hayes, has been riding Leonidas since she was 16.

“He is a complete character,” Johnstone said fondly of the 14-year-old Hannoverian gelding owned by Trish Crang.“He is quirky, but he is a tonne of fun.He gives it his all.”

Johnstone, who will begin studying at the University of Guelph this fall, will continue competing during week two of the National Capital Show Jumping Tournaments.Following a two-day break, competition resumes at 8 a.m. on Wednesday, August 17.

The second week of competition, running August 17 to 21, will see two-time Olympic course designer Leopoldo Palacios of Venezuela setting the tracks in the grand prix field.Highlights include the $10,000 Ottawa Rental & Supply Ltd. Open Welcome on Friday, August 19, and the thrilling $10,000 ATCO Jumping Derby on Saturday, August 20.The grand finale is Sunday’s $75,000 CSI** Brookstreet Grand Prix, sanctioned by the International Equestrian Federation (FEI).

Ottawa, Ontario – For the second year in a row, Sarah Johnstone and Leonidas stood in the winner’s circle following the $10,000 Modified Grand Prix held Saturday, August 13, at the National Capital Show Jumping Tournaments taking place at the Nepean National Equestrian Park in Ottawa, ON.

The $10,000 Peel Maryborough Mutual Insurance Company/Henry Equestrian Insurance Brokers Ltd. Modified Grand Prix was Saturday’s featured show jumping event. A total of 19 horses vied for the victory, with defending champions Johnstone and Leonidas posting the first clear round over the course designed by Mexico’s Catsy Cruz. Olympic team silver medalist Ian Millar of Perth, ON, assured the crowd of a jump-off by jumping clear with Dryden while his student, Karen Sparks of Ottawa, ON, immediately followed suit by doing the same with Victoria.

First back, Johnstone of Aurora, ON, galloped over the shortened jump-off track, leaving all the rails in place before crossing the timers in 42.10 seconds. Millar gave it his best shot with Dryden, a 10-year-old Belgian Warmblood stallion owned by Susan Grange. The pair had the crowd’s encouragement coming home, but the scoreboard told the final tale when a time of 42.27 seconds left the nine-time Olympian just off the winning pace.

Sparks meant business as she galloped around the course with Victoria, a nine-year-old Dutch Warmblood mare owned by Brookstreet Stables. Ironically, a rail fell at the final fence, the Brookstreet signature jump, ending her chances of victory as the pair did have the fastest time, 41.68 seconds. Sparks finished in third place, just as she had on Friday riding Ferraro K in the $10,000 NationWide Open Welcome.

For Johnstone, 20, it was her second consecutive win in the $10,000 Modified Grand Prix.

“Being first back is always a bit tricky because you’ve got to set the pace,” explained Johnstone of her jump-off strategy. “You have Ian Millar behind you and Karen Sparks who is very competitive and always does well at this event. My plan was to be clear and efficient, and to set a good pace for them. Luckily enough, it worked out.”

While the pair only had to defeat two other jump-off contenders this time around, last year they outran an 18-horse jump-off.

“It’s his type of class,” said Johnstone of her success with Leonidas, a 14-year-old Hannoverian gelding owned by Trish Crang. “He is great on grass and it is a beautiful field to ride in, which makes a huge difference. Today he warmed up super and, generally speaking, when he warms up well and I am on it, it is a good combination.”

Johnstone, who will begin studying at the University of Guelph next month, has been training with two-time Olympian Jay Hayes at North Ridge in Orangeville, ON, since she was 12 years old. The Hayes family organizes the National Capital Show Jumping Tournaments.

“It is fantastic, it adds so much more to it,” said Johnstone of her win. “It is encouraging to do well here.”

Two weeks earlier, Johnstone scored her first International Equestrian Federation (FEI) sanctioned win by riding Starlet to victory in the $32,000 CSI3* Open Welcome in Bromont, QC.

“Honestly, I just think about the next class,” said Johnstone of her winning streak. “You are only as good as your next class. There is always a bigger show that you want to win, and you have to keep looking forward to the next win. That’s what keeps you going.”

Her coach, Jay Hayes, commented, “Sarah is a beautiful up and coming rider, mature past her years, and a terrific worker. I’ve had some good students in my long teaching career, and I can compare her to Olympic gold medalist Eric Lamaze, who worked with me for three years when he was around the same age.”

In Saturday’s other featured event, the $5,000 Brocolli Hill Hunter Derby, Kelley Soleau of Marlborough, Connecticut, emerged victorious riding Vianco v/d Rampaarden, who usually competes in the show jumping ring. In their Hunter Derby debut, the pair earned a score of 100 to triumph over 44 other entries.

“To be honest, I really only entered the Hunter Derby for fun,” said Soleau, who trains with the Millar family at Millar Brooke Farm in Perth, ON. “I thought it would be a nice break for ‘Vinnie’ from the jumper ring. He performed amazingly well, considering he has only done a total of 10 hunter rounds before. I guess it just goes to show that you never know what they are capable of.”

Approximately 500 horses will compete during the two weeks of competition, running August 10 to 14 and August 17-21 at the Nepean National Equestrian Park, conveniently located at the 417 Queensway and Moodie Drive. The $25,000 Hayes Co. Grand Prix, beginning at approximately 2 p.m., will be the featured event on Sunday, August 14.

The second week of competition, running August 17 to 21, will see two-time Olympic course designer Leopoldo Palacios of Venezuela setting the tracks in the grand prix field. Highlights include the $10,000 Ottawa Rental & Supply Ltd. Open Welcome on Friday, August 19, and the thrilling $10,000 ATCO Jumping Derby on Saturday, August 20. The grand finale is Sunday’s $75,000 CSI** Brookstreet Grand Prix, sanctioned by the International Equestrian Federation (FEI).

Ottawa, Ontario – The student beat the teacher as 21-year-old Jordan MacPherson of Toronto, ON, edged her coach, Jonathon Millar of Perth, ON, for the win in Friday’s $10,000 NationWide Open Welcome at the National Capital Show Jumping Tournaments taking place at the Nepean National Equestrian Park in Ottawa, ON.

MacPherson trains with nine-time Olympian Ian Millar and his children, Canadian Equestrian Team members Jonathon and Amy, at Millar Brooke Farm in Perth, ON. Another Millar Brooke student, Karen Sparks of Ottawa, ON, took third place in Friday’s event.

A total of 15 horses took to the grass grand prix field in an effort to jump clear over the track set by course designer Catsy Cruz of Mexico. Five horses passed the test to advance to the all-deciding jump-off.

MacPherson led things off, posting another clear round in a time of 42.46 seconds riding Piccobello, her partner since last November. Miranda Travers-Cavill of Claremont, ON, was next to challenge with Legende de B’Neville but left a rail on the ground to eventually finish fifth.

Michele Hinrichs of Brantford, ON, guided Patronuss to a steady clear round in the jump-off, but their time of 49.19 seconds was no threat to the leader. It was a different story altogether when Jonathon Millar entered the ring. The 36-year-old did his best to catch MacPherson, tightening his turns and galloping over the track with Cantero Z, but his final time of 44.75 was not fast enough to take over the lead.

As the last rider on course, Sparks had the final opportunity to catch MacPherson. Her nine-year-old Dutch-bred horse, Ferraro K, didn’t touch a rail, but a time of 46.43 seconds left Sparks in third position.

For MacPherson, the win marked the biggest victory of her career to date.

“I know she’s a fast horse to begin with, so I just wanted to ride the plan and jump clean,” said MacPherson, who had won Wednesday’s 1.40m Junior/Amateur event at the National Capital Show Jumping Tournaments. “Jonathon’s horse is also fast, and obviously he’s had more experience than I have, but you never really know what is going to happen when you go first. You just hope that you are fast enough.”

Fast enough she was, relegating Jonathon Millar to second place.

“Piccobello is a naturally quick horse and Jordan was efficient,” said Jonathon Millar, who was a member of Canada’s fifth place team at the 2010 World Equestrian Games. “I did what I could today, but she was better. You can’t be unhappy when your students beat you because that is what they aspire to. It was a great win for Jordan, and it was a nice day for Millar Brooke, taking first, second and third.”

MacPherson, a student at Western University who has trained at Millar Brooke Farm for the past three years, noted, “It is to their credit that they have taught me so well.”

Other winners in Friday’s events included two-time Olympian Jay Hayes of Orangeville, ON, who guided Riva to victory in the $5,000 1.35m Lynn Millar Memorial. Owned by Summerhill Farm, the seven-year-old Canadian Warmblood mare also took top honours with Hayes in the Seven and Eight-Year-Old Division of the Jump Canada Young Horse Series. Millar Brooke Farm’s Alazan, ridden by Jonathon Millar, won the Six-Year-Old Division, while Jay Hayes’ son-in-law, Johan Letimonier, captured victory in the Five-Year-Old Division aboard Selma de la Batia, owned by DK Masterson Holdings.

Approximately 500 horses will compete during the two weeks of competition, running August 10 to 14 and August 17-21 at the Nepean National Equestrian Park, conveniently located at the 417 Queensway and Moodie Drive. Featured events on Saturday, August 13, include the $10,000 Peel Maryborough Mutual Insurance Company/Henry Equestrian Insurance Brokers Ltd. Modified Grand Prix, followed by the $5,000 Broccoli Hill Hunter Derby. The $25,000 Hayes Co. Grand Prix will be held at approximately 2 p.m. on Sunday, August 14.

Ottawa's Kelley Robinson Dominates National Capital Show Jumping Tournaments

Ottawa, Ontario – Ottawa’s own Kelley Robinson dominated Thursday’s competition at the National Capital Show Jumping Tournaments taking place at the Nepean National Equestrian Park in Ottawa, ON.

In addition to winning the 1.35m competition riding Caberlay, the 27-year-old athlete also placed third and sixth with two other mounts.

The first rider to tackle the course set by Mexico’s Catsy Cruz was Robinson’s former coach, Olympic team silver medalist Jill Henselwood of Oxford Mills, ON, who had a rail down with New Idol Z. Robinson was next into the ring with Caberlay and jumped clear to advance to the jump-off. Leaving all the rails in place in a time of 47.01 seconds, none who followed were able to catch Robinson’s time.

“I went semi-fast in the jump-off, and I don’t know how that happened!” said Robinson, who was surprised that her time held up for the win. “I didn’t feel like I was going that fast, but my horse has such a huge stride that he covers the ground quickly.”

Robinson has been riding Caberlay, an eight-year-old Hungarian Warmblood gelding, for the past two years. She also placed third riding Cayotee after jumping clear in the jump-off in a time of 49.33 seconds, and sixth with Barretta after having one rail down in the jump-off.

Second place went to another local competitor, Natalie Bova of Ashton, ON, who was clear in the jump-off in a time of 47.68 seconds riding Belafonte.

After training with Henselwood for more than a decade, Robinson struck out on her own, opening Cimarron Show Stables in Russell, ON, with her husband, David Robinson. Robinson has brought 10 horses to compete at this year’s National Capital Show Jumping Tournaments, including seven that her students will ride under her watchful eye.

For Robinson, having an international show jumping competition in her backyard is a dream come true.

“It is amazing,” said Robinson. “There are lots of competitions in Toronto and Quebec, but for Ottawa, this is it. No one ever gets to see me compete, so here in Ottawa, I get lots of fans. I had a lot of fans here today, actually. And it is even better for my students. It is great for the kids. Their friends and families can see them compete. It is very exciting for them.”

The National Capital Show Jumping Tournaments provides the only opportunity all year for show jumping fans to see such famous competitors as nine-time Olympian Ian Millar of Perth, ON, and his 2008 Olympic Silver medal teammates, Jill Henselwood and Mac Cone.

“There are a lot of people in this area, and we need a show like this,” said Robinson. “It just keeps growing. There are a lot of farms, and a lot of horse people in the area. The location is easy for everyone to get to; it is right there off the 417, so everyone knows it.”

While the competition expects to welcome approximately 30,000 fans over the course of its two-week run, having an event of this caliber in the Ottawa area is even more attractive for the competitors.

“We need competitions like this,” said Robinson, who began riding at the age of 10 at summer camp. “Other than Spruce Meadows out in Calgary, we don’t have any other big shows like this with a big grass field. The ring is huge, the course designers are incredible, and it has a great atmosphere. It is amazing, I love competing here.”

Other winners in Thursday’s event include Lauren Hayes of Orangeville, ON, who rode Sweet Leonie to victory in the 1.25m competition and also placed third riding Zidane, owned by D.K. Masterson Holdings. Her student, Sophia Sigler of Ottawa, ON, placed second with Jungle Jack.

Toronto’s Susan Horn rode Phenix de Coquerie to victory in the 1.10m Junior/Amateur competition while 16-year-old Mikala Chesler of Orangeville, ON, won the 1.30m Junior/Amateur competition riding Masquerade. In the final competition of the day, Miranda Travers-Cavill of Claremont, ON, emerged the winner with Col de Rousset.

Approximately 500 horses will compete during the two weeks of competition, running August 10 to 14 and August 17-21 at the Nepean National Equestrian Park, conveniently located at the 417 Queensway and Moodie Drive. The first week of competition features the $10,000 NationWide Open Welcome on Friday and the $10,000 Peel Maryborough Mutual Insurance Company/Henry Equestrian Insurance Brokers Ltd. Modified Grand Prix on Saturday, August 13, followed by the $5,000 Broccoli Hill Hunter Derby. The $25,000 Hayes Co. Grand Prix will be held at approximately 2 p.m. on Sunday, August 14.

The second week of competition, running August 17-21, will see two-time Olympic course designer Leopoldo Palacios of Venezuela acting as course designer on the grass grand prix field.

International show jumping competition galloped into Ottawa as the National Capital Show Jumping Tournaments opened its gates on Wednesday, August 10. The two-week equestrian event is taking place at the National Nepean Equestrian Park, located at the Moodie Drive exit of the 417, in Ottawa, ON.

Approximately 500 horses will compete during the two weeks of competition, running August 10 to 14 and August 17-21. Ottawa City Mayor Jim Watson was in attendance on opening day, as was Terry Matthews, owner of partner hotel, Brookstreet, and title sponsor of the $75,000 Brookstreet Grand Prix on Sunday, August 21. Nine-time Olympian and Honorary Chair, Ian Millar of Perth, ON, joined National Capital Show Jumping Tournaments Co-Chair Jay Hayes and his daughter, Event Coordinator Ainsley Hayes, in officially launching this year’s event.

“We are thrilled to once again be bringing show jumping back to the Nation’s Capital, and are very fortunate to have such great support from the exhibitors, spectators, sponsors and the City of Ottawa,” said two-time Canadian Olympian Jay Hayes, who Co-Chairs the National Capital Show Jumping Tournaments with his wife, Shawn. “The role that Mayor Watson has played has been instrumental. He has bent over backwards to ensure that show jumping returned to the city.”

Mayor Watson stated, “It has been my pleasure to help bring this event back to Ottawa, and to facilitate it returning for years to come. It’s part of my goal to offer tourist events that showcase the beauty of the city, that bring people in and let them experience it. The Hayes family should be so proud of the event they have put together. It is also great to have Ian Millar here. He is an incredible example of athleticism and persistence, competing in nine Olympics, and what an inspiration to Ottawa’s young athletes competing here.”

Brookstreet has been the partner hotel of the National Capital Show Jumping Tournament since its inaugural event in 2008. The hotel is the title sponsor of the $75,000 Brookstreet Grand Prix on Sunday, August 21, which is one of only a handful of Canadian events sanctioned by the International Equestrian Federation (FEI). It takes place on the grand prix field, widely considered to be one of the best grass jumping fields in North America.

“I have supported this event for many, many years,” said Terry Matthews, owner of Brookstreet. “It’s a great draw for people and for Ottawa tourism, and hey, nobody said you can’t have fun at the same time! It’s great to be involved with something that just keeps getting better and better.

“For the City of Ottawa, this really puts show jumping on the map,” continued Matthews. “The green grass, the horses, the entertainment, the athletes – everything just comes together here. It’s a great place for people in Ottawa to come and see show jumping up close.”

Olympic team silver medalist Ian Millar echoed those sentiments, stating, “This facility supports the foundation of the sport in the city. That riding school up on the hill is where kids can learn about horses, be with horses, and ride. To be able to showcase the sport like this at the Nepean National Equestrian Park is great. For the riders, it’s a thrill to compete here. Many of the competitors and spectators return year after year. Once they get a taste of it, they just want to keep coming back.”

Ainsley Hayes summed it up by saying, “We couldn’t have done this without the support of the city and the support of the fans. We have two great weeks of competition coming up, and what better way to end than with the $75,000 Brookstreet on Sunday, August 21. Bring your family and bring your friends. Even if they aren’t into horses, it’s a great event and fun for everyone.”

The two-week show jumping tournament will take place from August 10-14 and 17-21 at the Nepean National Equestrian Park, conveniently located at the 417 Queensway and Moodie Drive. The first week of competition, running August 10-14, is highlighted by the $25,000 Hayes Co. Grand Prix on Sunday, August 14. Other featured events include the $10,000 NationWide Open Welcome on Friday and the $10,000 Peel Maryborough Mutual Insurance Company/Henry Equestrian Insurance Brokers Ltd. Modified Grand Prix on Saturday, August 13, followed by the $5,000 Broccoli Hill Hunter Derby.

The second week of competition, running August 17-21, will see two-time Olympic course designer Leopoldo Palacios of Venezuela acting as course designer on the grass grand prix field. In addition to Sunday’s $75,000 CSI** Brookstreet Grand Prix, highlights include the $10,000 Ottawa Rental & Supply Ltd. Open Welcome on Friday, and the thrilling $10,000 ATCO Jumping Derby on Saturday.

National Capital Show Jumping Tournament Looks Forward to 2011

Ottawa, Ontario – The CSI2* National Capital Show Jumping Tournament wrapped up its third annual event in August, and is now looking forward to the next edition in 2011.

Held August 11 to 22 at the Nepean National Equestrian Park in Ottawa, ON, the 2010 National Capital Show Jumping Tournament crowned numerous champions throughout its two-week run. With first-class FEI course designers Guilherme Jorge of Brazil and Catsy Cruz of Mexico setting the tracks, competitors enjoyed riding in the Grand Prix field, widely considered to be one of the best grass arenas in North America. The Central Region final for the Jump Canada Young Horse Series was held on the grass grand prix field, giving valuable experience to the up-and-coming superstar horses of the future, while the hunter competitors also had an opportunity to compete on the grass field as the National Capital Show Jumping Tournament was selected to host a $5,000 Jump Canada Hunter Derby.

The grand finale of the 2010 National Capital Show Jumping Tournament was the $118,000 Angelstone Productions Grand Prix, Presented by Brookstreet, held Saturday night, followed by a live performance by renowned Canadian recording artists, Blue Rodeo. Nine-time Olympian Ian Millar of Perth, ON, provided a popular hometown victory immediately followed by the live outdoor concert held on the Grand Prix field in front of 8,566 spectators.

With television coverage of three events, a ‘Rock the Runway’ fashion show produced by Regan Hayes and Vanessa Marino, and free photos available on Flickr from horse show photographer Yavuz, the National Capital Show Jumping Tournament offered much more than a horse show. As a way of recognizing the support it receives from its exhibitors, and the National Capital is pleased to introduce the unique concept of offering free competition photos, available for download at http://www.flickr.com/photos/53978741@N05/

“We are very excited to keep giving back to the industry that supports us,” said Ainsley Hayes, Event Coordinator of the National Capital Show Jumping Tournament. “Our official photographer, Yavuz, approached us with the idea of giving photos for free, as a thank you to our exhibitors for their support. We are always striving to better our events, and it’s the little things that count.”

Hayes continued, “We were able to introduce an innovative new element to the event with year with the Blue Rodeo concert. When you introduce a new concept into an already established event, there is always a learning curve, but we have benefitted from doing it once and are working hard on improvements for 2011.”

A successful event would not be possible without generous sponsors, and the National Capital Show Jumping Tournament wishes to recognize and thank the following new sponsors who came on board for 2010 including Angelstone Productions, Bullfrog, Case IH, Ellis Don, The Karson Group, Vittoria Trattoria, and Waste Management.

Thank you also to returning sponsors Antares, ATCO, Blackbird, Brookledge, Brookstreet Hotel, Champion Shavings, CompetitiveJumpers.com, Corby Distilleries, CRS, Grand Prix, Greenhawk, Henry Equestrian Insurance, McKee Pownall, Omega Alpha, The Properties Group and Rogers Television for their continued support.

Combining Grand Prix show jumping with a live music concert is the innovative concept of Angelstone Productions, also the Grand Prix’s title sponsor. Organizers are planning to repeat the successful format in 2011, and welcome suggestions for musical acts.

Ian Millar Pulls One-Two Punch to Win $118,000 Grand Prix

Ottawa, Ontario – Nine-time Olympian Ian Millar proved he still has what it takes, taking first and second place in the $118,000 Angelstone Productions Grand Prix, Presented by Brookstreet, on Saturday night at the CSI2* National Capital Show Jumping Tournament in Ottawa, ON.

The second richest Grand Prix event in eastern Canada, the $118,000 Angelstone Productions Grand Prix, Presented by Brookstreet, followed by a live performance by Blue Rodeo, capped off the two-week international show jumping tournament in front of 8,566 spectators.

A total of 27 challengers lined up to tackle the course set by Catsy Cruz. The international course designer from Monterrey, Mexico, was hoping for five clear rounds, and that is exactly what she got. Millar qualified two mounts for the jump-off, Star Power and Dryden, and was joined by 21-year-old David Arcand, American Lisa Deslauriers, and the winner of Thursday’s $32,000 Brookstreet/CompetitiveJumpers.com Open Welcome, Angela Covert-Lawrence.

Arcand of Montreal, QC, was the first rider back for the jump-off with Santos Utopia, but two rails down in a time of 32.42 seconds would leave him in fifth place.

Millar went for a slow and steady clear round with the nine-year-old Star Power, leaving all the rails in place and stopping the clock at 35.18 seconds to take over the lead.

Lisa Deslauriers of New York, NY, had managed to jump clear in the first round, despite almost parting ways with her mount, Diablo, and completing the course with only one stirrup. In the jump-off, the pair also jumped clear, but was just off Millar’s pace, clocking in at 35.67 seconds.

Millar was up again, this time with Susan Grange’s Dryden, another nine-year-old. Knowing he already held the lead, the 63-year-old show jumping veteran took more risks, turning in yet another faultless performance in a time of 33.43.

It was all up to Angela Covert-Lawrence of St. Lazare, QC. Riding Unica, her 13-year-old mare, Covert-Lawrence was blistering fast, but unfortunately two rails came down, ending their hopes for repeat of Thursday’s winning performance.

That left Millar, better known as ‘Captain Canada’ to his fans, in first and second place with a total of $57,500 in prize money. Deslauriers took home $14,000 for third, Covert-Lawrence claimed $12,000 for fourth, and Arcand won $9,000 for fifth place.

“Now I can buy shoes for my granddaughter,” joked Millar, whose daughter, Amy, who placed ninth in the competition, welcomed Lily into the world three months ago.

Of the competition, Millar said, “It was fairly serious jumping today, and it was hard to jump the jumps clean, let alone go fast. You had to find the balance between leaving the jumps up, and speed. I wasn’t slow, but I sure wasn’t blistering fast, and I was a sitting duck. The ladies torqued it up a little bit, and one wasn’t fast enough and Angie was certainly fast enough, but had her fault. That is the key, finding the balance.”

With two horses in the jump-off, Millar did not think that one had a distinct advantage over the other.

“One is as fast as the other I would say, they are both young horses just coming along. It was more about where they were plugged in in the order. What I wanted was to get one clear round in the bank, so that put the heat on the rest a little bit. And then I just had all my options going. In the jump-off, there is a lot of strategy. I knew I had the leading time, so if I torqued it up a little bit with Dryden, not only would I have a faster time of course, but I would put the pressure on that last horse. By putting the pressure on the last horse, maybe she makes a mistake.”

Millar’s strategy worked, and Covert-Lawrence dropped two rails.

“It is always hard in the jump-off to gauge where you are in relation to the others, but my horse is really fast,” said Covert-Lawrence of her jump-off performance. “I had the fastest time; and in fact I had a second to spare. That second I should have taken in the corner going to fence eight and maybe I would have left it up, but that’s show jumping.”

Covert-Lawrence finished the week with a win in Thursday’s $32,000 Brookstreet/CompetitiveJumpers.com Open Welcome riding Utan, a second place finish in the $15,000 ATCO Jumping Derby with Candidate du Marquet, and a fourth place finish in the feature event, the $118,000 Angelstone Productions Grand Prix, Presented by Brookstreet.

“Overall, I can’t complain,” she said. “I have had one of the best weeks of my show jumping career.”

Following the Grand Prix, Staggered Crossing took the stage, followed by Canadian performing artists, Blue Rodeo. Combining Grand Prix show jumping with a live music concert is the innovative concept of Angelstone Productions, also the Grand Prix’s title sponsor.

Mario Deslauriers Speeds to Victory in $15,000 ATCO Jumping Derby

Ottawa, Ontario – Mario Deslauriers proved to be the best of the 23 entries attempting the $15,000 ATCO Jumping Derby on Friday at the CSI2* National Capital Show Jumping Tournament in Ottawa, ON.

Course designer Catsy Cruz of Mexico set a true derby track that made use of the expansive grass field’s banks, ditches and water jumps. Of those who attempted the long, challenging course, only four managed to jump clear inside the 136 second time allowed to return for the jump-off.

Defending champion Leslie Howard of Westport, CT, was first back riding Goed Zo, her 8-year-old Holsteiner gelding. Unfortunately, the 1984 Olympic team gold medalist knocked down a rail mid-way through the shortened jump-off track for a final score of four faults in a time of 37.71 seconds.

Mario Deslauriers then took to the field with Whistler, an eight-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding owned by Jane Clark. Partnered together this winter, the pair left all the rails in place in a time of 35.46 seconds to take the lead.

Angela Covert-Lawrence of St. Lazare, QC, attempted to make it two in a row, having won Thursday’s $32,000 Brookstreet/CompetitiveJumpers.com Open Welcome. Despite leaving all the rails in place with Candidate du Marquet, Covert-Lawrence was one second off the pace, crossing the timers in 36.47 seconds.

Howard still had one more shot at defending her title, but her chances came to an abrupt end when Raimond W refused the first obstacle. Four faults for the refusal, as well as 47 time faults for exceeding the time allowed, left Howard in fourth place.

The win belonged to Deslauriers, a Canadian Show Jumping Team veteran who, after marrying American Lisa Silverman, began riding for the United States in 2009. The couple is based in New York City, and Lisa competed alongside her husband in the $15,000 ATCO Jumping Derby, placing tenth with Obelix R.

“Today the conditions were beautiful; the weather makes it or breaks it,” said Deslauriers who, on Thursday, opted not to compete in the $32,000 Brookstreet/CompetitiveJumpers.com Open Welcome with his top horse Urico, his mount for the World Equestrian Games in September.

Interestingly, Whistler, his winning mount in the $15,000 ATCO Jumping Derby, is a son of Pitareusa, the horse of Yann Candele that has been short listed for Canada’s team at the World Equestrian Games.

“We bought Whistler in Florida this year, and it is fun to see because he looks like Pitareusa,” said Deslauriers, 44. “It is very interesting for people who follow the breeding.”

The 1984 World Cup winner commented of his win, “I’m trying to get my weekend started on a good note. It is fun to win; it puts a smile on your face. And this is a beautiful field to ride on, we love competing in Ottawa.”

Covert-Lawrence, 34, was also smiling about her eight-year-old Belgian Warmblood mare’s performance.

“It is a long way around and she’s never done a Derby before,” she said. “In the jump-off, she tripped pretty hard going to the last jump, but Mario is such a fast rider, he is hard to beat.”

With one major victory already to their credit this week, both Deslauriers and Covert-Lawrence will be fighting to win Saturday’s $118,000 Angelstone Productions Grand Prix, Presented by Brookstreet.

Beginning at 5 p.m., the $118,000 Angelstone Productions Grand Prix, Presented by Brookstreet, will be immediately followed by Blue Rodeo, live in concert, featuring Staggered Crossing. This unique venue at the Nepean National Equestrian Park offers top-level international show jumping and a music concert in an intimate setting. Tickets for Saturday’s event are available through www.CapitalTickets.ca and can be purchased at the gate. General parking is $10 and preferred parking is $20.

Angela Covert-Lawrence Captures $32,000 Open Welcome in Ottawa

Ottawa, Ontario – A last minute decision landed Angela Covert-Lawrence of St. Lazare, QC, in the winner’s circle for the $32,000 Brookstreet/CompetitiveJumpers.com Open Welcome held Thursday, August 19, at the CSI2* National Capital Show Jumping Tournament in Ottawa, ON.

A mid-afternoon thunderstorm before the competition, sanctioned by the International Equestrian Federation (FEI) and scheduled for 5 p.m., made Covert-Lawrence indecisive about competing with her young mount, Utan.

“Utan is my young horse, and this is his first year jumping FEI Grand Prix competition, so right up until I was two horses away from going in the ring, I still wasn’t sure I was going to go,” explained Covert-Lawrence.

Covert-Lawrence was one of seven riders to jump clear over the first round track set by course designer Catsy Cruz of Mexico. She was also in the enviable position of being the final rider to contest the shortened jump-off track, knowing exactly what she had to do to win with Utan, a nine-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding. Her time of 35.80 seconds was quick enough to take over top spot from Ainsley Vince of Milton, ON, who had stopped the clock in 36.11 seconds riding Frieda.

“I didn’t go in planning to win, but after I jumped the first three jumps, I knew I was at least on target for the time, so I went for it,” said Covert-Lawrence, 34, who claimed $9,000 in prize money for her victory, presented by Ottawa Mayor Larry O’Brien and Brookstreet representative, Karen Sparks. “I am really happy. He couldn’t have been better. This is the horse’s biggest win.”

Vince, 34, settled for second with Frieda, her nine-year-old German-bred mare.

“When I came out of the ring, I knew I was beatable,” said Vince. “I didn’t go in thinking I could win in that group of horses given Frieda’s age and inexperience. She’s a strong personality, but she’s also a fighter, and that’s what makes her so great in the ring.”

Yet another female competitor, American Olympic team gold medalist Leslie Howard of Westport, CT, took third place with Raimond W after turning in a time of 36.68 seconds while nine-time Olympian Ian Millar riding Star Power, the winners of last Friday’s $10,000 Open Welcome, settled for fourth this time around after stopping the clock in 36.85 seconds.

David Arcand, 21, of Montreal, QC, placed fifth in a time of 38.32 seconds riding Santos Utopia while Perth’s Jonathon Millar, the pathfinder on the jump-off track, was sixth in 39.43 seconds riding a new mount, Always Cullohill. Mario Deslauriers, who was recently named to the United States Equestrian Team for the upcoming World Equestrian Games, turned in the fastest jump-off performance with a time of 34.69 riding Vicomte D, but a four-fault penalty for a fallen rail left him seventh.

The two-week National Capital Show Jumping Tournament continues on Friday with the $15,000 ATCO Jumping Derby. Saturday brings the $118,000 Angelstone Productions Grand Prix, Presented by Brookstreet, and the Blue Rodeo concert, beginning at 5 p.m. Tickets for Saturday’s event are available through www.CapitalTickets.ca. Revised Schedule for the National Capital Show Jumping Tournament

Ottawa, Ontario — Organizers have announced a revised schedule for the second week of competition, running August 18 to 22, of the National Capital Show Jumping Tournament at the Nepean National Equestrian Park in Ottawa, ON. Due to severe thunderstorms in the Ottawa area on Sunday, August 15, the $75,000 Brookstreet Grand Prix did not run.

The second week of competition at the National Capital Show Jumping Tournament, which resumes on Wednesday, August 18, will feature scheduling changes and increased prize money.

Thursday’s featured event, originally the $10,000 CompetitiveJumpers.com Open Welcome, will now be the CSI2* $32,000 Brookstreet CompetitiveJumpers.com Open Welcome, scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. Sanctioned as a Category D by the International Equestrian Federation (FEI), competitors will gain valuable points towards the Rolex World Rider Rankings. With the increased prize money, the Grand Prix has been upgraded to a Category B rating by the FEI, giving competitors access to even more Rolex World Rider Ranking points for their placings, including 100 points to the winner.

“While the severe weather meant we could not run the Brookstreet Grand Prix on Sunday, we have been able to revise our schedule for the second week of competition to offer our competitors even more prize money as well as two opportunities to gain valuable points in the Rolex World Rider Rankings,” said Ainsley Hayes, Event Manager of the National Capital Show Jumping Tournaments. “We would like to thank our sponsors for their understanding and support, all of our FEI Officials, and especially Karen Hendry-Ouellette and Jennifer Mahoney at Equine Canada’s show jumping department for working so quickly to have our schedule changes approved by the International Equestrian Federation.”

Greg Kuti and Prudence Capture $5,000 Hunter Derby in Ottawa

Ottawa, Ontario – Greg Kuti of Schomberg, ON, riding Prudence won the $5,000 Jump Canada Hunter Derby held Saturday evening, August 14, during the CSI2* National Capital Show Jumping Tournament at the Nepean National Equestrian Park in Ottawa, ON.

The $5,000 Jump Canada Hunter Derby attracted stiff competition as a total of 35 entries vied for victory, as well as an Antares ‘Spooner’ saddle, donated by Antares Canada Inc., which was awarded to the winner.

The $5,000 Jump Canada Hunter Derby consisted of a series of fences with no related distances, and competitors had the choice of completing the course at a height of either 3’ or 3’6. Held on the grass grand prix field at the Nepean National Equestrian Park, riders had to navigate their mounts through a roll back turn, a jump on the peak of a steep bank, and through a grob ditch.

The judges were looking for the horse that exemplified the style, movement and manner that typifies hunter competition. Following the first round of competition, the judges invited eight horse-rider combinations back for a second round of competition. The riders’ second round scores were added together with their first round scores to produce the winner.

“I am looking for form, pace, quality and performance,” said senior judge Peter Van Guysling of New York. “The horse has to be a good jumper, and have a good attitude. It has to be a horse you would want to fox hunt on and enjoy.”

Senior judge Christine Renwick of Ottawa, ON, agreed.

“The fox hunt is what the hunter discipline is based on,” said Renwick, who actively rides with the Ottawa Valley Hunt.

That horse proved to be Prudence, an eight-year-old chestnut selle francais mare piloted by Kuti and owned by Carolynne Jardine. Jardine purchased Prudence last fall from Eric Lamaze’s Torrey Pines Stable in Schomberg, ON. The pair scored an impressive 85 out of a possible 100 points in the first round, and went on the match their score in the second round for a total of 170 points.

“It was so much fun!” exclaimed Kuti, who operates Chor-Be Farm in Schomberg, ON. “It feels so good to win, especially at such a fantastic venue: it is one of the last premiere facilities in North America.

“The course designer, Tracy Howard, did a great job; she was creative but kept it simple,” continued Kuti. “I am so proud of Prudence, she is just a very special horse; a real lady. This was our first hunter derby, but we hope to do more.”

Kuti was also proud to lay claim to the Antares saddle, saying, “The Antares is one of the nicest saddles in the entire world to ride in.”

David Marion, President of Antares Canada Inc., said of sponsorship of the $5,000 Jump Canada Hunter Derby, “I wanted to do something to support the event. “It was nice to donate a prize for an amateur division, as they do not always get recognized, and support the sport from the ground up. Plus, Greg’s round was perfect; he really deserved to win the Antares saddle. I could not be more pleased with how it turned out.”

Placing second in the $5,000 Jump Canada Hunter Derby was Taylor’s Design, owned and ridden by Taylor Mulligan. The pair came close to catching Kuti, posting scores of 84 in the first round and 83 in the second, for a total of 167.

Landing in third position was Winston, ridden by Carly Campbell- Cooper and owned by Triple C Stables of Elora, ON. Receiving a score of 82 in the first round and 84 in the second round, the pair finished only one point behind the runner-up with a score of 166.

The Jump Canada Hunter Derby is a new event introduced by Jump Canada to give recognition and build support for hunter competition.

“I’m thrilled that we were chosen to host this event,” said Ainsley Hayes, National Capital Show Jumping Tournament Event Manager. “We have one of the best grand prix fields in North America, so why should the jumpers get to use it exclusively? There was a huge turn-out, which shows that the Hunter Derby is a growing trend. People are really excited about it.”

The two-week National Capital Show Jumping Tournament runs from August 11-15 and 18-22 at the Nepean National Equestrian Park, conveniently located at the 417 Queensway and Moodie Drive. The second week of competition will feature the CSI2* $32,000 Brookstreet CompetitiveJumpers.com Open Welcome on Thursday, the $15,000 ATCO Jumping Derby on Friday, and Saturday’s CSI2* $118,000 Angelstone Productions Grand Prix, Presented by Brookstreet, and Blue Rodeo concert.

Sunday’s Show Jumping Event Postponed Due to Weather

Ottawa, Ontario — Due to severe thunderstorms in the Ottawa area on Sunday, August 15, organizers of the National Capital Show Jumping Tournament made the difficult decision to not run the $75,000 Brookstreet Grand Prix on Sunday, August 15.

Scheduled to begin at 2 p.m., the $75,000 Brookstreet Grand Prix was the featured event of the first of two weeks of international show jumping competition comprising the National Capital Show Jumping Tournament. Organizers will now work with the International Equestrian Federation (FEI) in Switzerland to explore rescheduling options during the second week of competition, running August 18 to 22 at the Nepean National Equestrian Park in Ottawa, ON.

“It was a difficult decision to make, however, in the best interest of our competitors and their horses, it was the right choice,” said Ainsley Hayes, Event Manager of the National Capital Show Jumping Tournament. “The grass field here can hold large amounts of rain, but when there is thunder and lightning, it simply becomes a matter of safety for the horses. The majority of them wear metal shoes and that poses a risk we were simply not willing to take.”

Hayes continued, “We are very fortunate to have the support of great sponsors who understand that the safety of the horses is paramount, and who are willing to work with us to find a solution that is in everyone’s best interest. We were prepared for a great day of competition but, unfortunately, Mother Nature had other plans.”

Moving forward with the second week of international show jumping competition, Hayes says, “We will now work the FEI in the hopes of bringing a second FEI-sanctioned competition to our already exciting line-up of show jumping events planned for next week, including the Angelstone Productions Grand Prix, which will now be presented by Brookstreet, followed by the Blue Rodeo concert on Saturday, August 21.”

Further details will be announced once scheduling is confirmed with the FEI.

The two-week National Capital Show Jumping Tournament runs from August 11-15 and 18-22 at the Nepean National Equestrian Park, conveniently located at the 417 Queensway and Moodie Drive. For more information on the National Capital Show Jumping Tournament, please visit www.hayesco.ca.

Sarah Johnstone Speeds to Victory in Ottawa

Ottawa, Ontario — Sarah Johnstone of Toronto, ON, sped her way to victory in the $10,000 Modified Grand Prix held Saturday, August 14, at the National Capital Show Jumping Tournament taking place at the Nepean National Equestrian Park in Ottawa, ON.

A large starting field of 34 entries saddled up for the event, with 18 jumping clear to advance to the jump-off. In the shortened jump-off round, speed became the name of the game, and the leader board changed often as the times got faster and faster.

In the end, no one could catch Johnstone, who stopped the clock in 38.22 seconds to stay ahead of runner-up, Jill Henselwood of Oxford Mills, ON, who crossed the timers in 38.48 seconds.

“He’s a super fast horse on his own, so it is about letting him carry his own pace,” said Johnstone of her winning strategy with Leonidas, a 13-year-old Hannoverian gelding owned by Trish Crang. “When you put pressure on him, that’s when he starts to get a little bit nervous, so I let just him carry his natural pace, and he does his job.”

At the age of 19, Johnstone was one of the youngest competitors in Saturday’s $10,000 Modified Grand Prix. She attributed her success to her partnership with Leonidas, who she affectionately refers to as ‘Leo.’

“I have been riding him since I was 16, and I get along with him; I love his personality and his little quirks,” said Johnstone, who works as a rider for the Hayes family in Orangeville, ON. “This summer he has been unbelievable. I’ve learnt so much from him. I am so lucky to have the opportunity to ride him.”

Despite qualifying four horses for the jump-off, Jill Henselwood had to settle for second with George, an eight-year-old Hannoverian gelding owned by Juniper Farms. She also took fourth place riding IV Ever with a time of 39.18 seconds.

“I call them the Twin Towers because they are both so tall,” said Henselwood, who also qualified Bordino as well as her 2008 Olympic team silver medal horse, Special Ed, for the jump-off. “George is ADD. He will be checking out a kid in the crowd holding a balloon, and only realize at the last second, ‘oh, this is where you want me to go?’ But he jumps with a dynamic effort every time.”

Squeezing in between Henselwood’s mounts for third place was American Olympic gold and silver medalist Leslie Howard of Westport, CT. Riding Jeans Glove Varnel, a 13-year-old selle francais mare, Howard stopped the clock at 39.04.

Local favourite Karen Matthews Sparks of Ottawa, ON, took fifth place with a time of 39.21 seconds riding Ferraro K, an eight-year-old Danish Warmblood gelding owned by Brookstreet Stables.

Johnstone will be hoping for back-to-back victories when she competes in Sunday’s $75,000 Brookstreet Grand Prix, beginning at 2 p.m., riding Starlet. She will face stiff competition from Henselwood and Howard, as well as nine-time Olympian Ian Millar, whose two children, Jonathon and Amy, will also be competing.

The two-week National Capital Show Jumping Tournament runs from August 11-15 and 18-22 at the Nepean National Equestrian Park, conveniently located at the 417 Queensway and Moodie Drive. Admission for Sunday’s $75,000 Brookstreet Grand Prix beginning at 2 p.m. is $10 per person, parking included, with children two and under admitted free.

Ian Millar Receives Warm Welcome in Ottawa

Ottawa, Ontario — Nine-time Olympian Ian Millar of Perth, ON, was simply unbeatable, guiding his two mounts to first and second place in the $10,000 Open Welcome held Friday, August 13, at the National Capital Show Jumping Tournament taking place at the Nepean National Equestrian Park in Ottawa, ON.

A total of 31 horses attempted the track set by course designer Guilherme Jorge of Brazil with nine successfully leaving all the rails in place to advance to the jump-off. Two of those nine horses belonged to Millar, giving him double the chance to win. Riding Star Power first, Millar sliced his way around the shortened jump-off course, taking the last fence on an unbelievable angle to stop the clock in 42.92 seconds. When he returned to the grass grand prix field with Dryden, Millar still held the lead. Not one to rest on his laurels, the 63-year-old show jumping legend gave it his best shot, guiding Dryden to a clear round in a time of 43.35 to also take second place.

“Star Power is a Dutch horse that went to Italy when he was seven, where his rider brought him along beautifully, and a lot of his training was done on grass fields,” said Millar of Star Power, a nine-year-old gelding that he purchased in November of 2009. “In Italy, he had his high school education, and now he is working on his PhD. These are two young horses; a little too young for the World Championships this year, but these are horses for the Pan Ams next year and then the Olympics.”

Millar, who became a grandfather to Lily Evelyn Millar Jukosky in May, has no intention of hanging up his riding boots any time soon.

“When you are doing what you love, you are always in a good frame of mind,” noted Millar, who was a member of Canada’s silver medal show jumping team at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. “What we do is never boring, and it is never work.”

Yann Candele of Caledon, ON, is known for his ability to ride at great speed, but he simply was not fast enough to catch Millar, having turned in a clear round in a time of 43.67 seconds aboard Azzaro Van’T Hagenhof.

“He’s been doing that for so many years now that it is expected,” said Candele, 39, of being beaten by Millar. “This was the first big competition of the week, so to be a part of it and get a good ribbon, you are pleased and feel that the horse is jumping well, and is ready for the big Grand Prix on Sunday.”

Two international competitors took fourth and fifth places. American Olympic gold and silver medalist Leslie Howard of Westport, CT, finished fourth riding Lennox Lewis 2. The pair are the defending champions of the $15,000 ATCO Derby, coming up on Friday, August 20. Katie McVean traveled all the way from New Zealand to compete in Canada this summer, and finished in fifth place riding the homebred Delphi.

Jenna Thompson of Calgary, AB, also jumped double clear to place sixth with Zeke while two-time Canadian Olympian Jay Hayes, who is also the Co-Chair of the National Capital Show Jumping Tournament, posted the fastest jump-off time, 41.47 seconds, but at the expense of one rail to finish seventh with Livarot.

The two-week National Capital Show Jumping Tournament runs from August 11-15 and 18-22 at the Nepean National Equestrian Park, conveniently located at the 417 Queensway and Moodie Drive. Highlights during the first week of competition include Saturday’s $10,000 Modified Grand Prix and Sunday’s $75,000 Brookstreet Grand Prix beginning at 2 p.m. FEI ‘O’ course designer Guilherme Jorge of Brazil is setting the tracks throughout the week on the grand prix field, widely considered to be one of the best grass jumping fields in North America.

The second week, August 18-22, will see Catsy Cruz of Mexico taking over course design duties. In addition to Saturday’s $75,000 Angelstone Productions Grand Prix and Blue Rodeo concert, highlights include the $10,000 CompetitiveJumpers.com Open Welcome on Thursday and Friday’s $15,000 ATCO Derby.

Multi-tasker Keean White Wins at National Capital Show Jumping Tournament

Ottawa, Ontario —Keean White of Cambridge, ON, won the 1.35m competition held Thursday, August 12, at the CSI2* National Capital Show Jumping Tournament taking place at the Nepean National Equestrian Park in Ottawa, ON.

Aboard Bethsabee, a nine-year-old Belgian Warmblood mare that he has only been riding for nine months, White was double clear and had the fastest time in the jump-off to claim victory over two Olympic team silver medalists, Jill Henselwood of Oxford Mills, ON, and Ian Millar of Perth, ON, who placed second and third respectively.

“This event is so important to me and I want to do everything I can to support the show and the Hayes family, so Angelstone Farms has seven horses competing this week and 11 horses next week”, said White, 27.

Wearing more than just one hat, or helmet in this case, White’s Angelstone Productions will produce the Blue Rodeo concert taking place Saturday, August 21, at the show grounds.

“We are so excited about Blue Rodeo,” said White. “We hope that the concert will draw crowds that would not normally come to see show jumping. This is one of the best equestrian venues in North America; it is a gem in Ottawa that many people do not even know about. The Hayes family has been so supportive; we have shared the same vision of bringing thousands of people out to see the sport since the very beginning. Plus, the grand prix ring is perfect for the concert; there is an elevated spectator area for those who don’t want to be crowded at the front. It’s such a unique venue, and we hope that it will be an event that the community will remember.”

Angelstone Productions will sponsor the $75,000 Angelstone Productions Grand Prix, held prior to the concert, on Saturday, August 21, beginning at 5:30 p.m. However, White was quick to add that his responsibilities as producer, promoter and sponsor will not distract him from competing.

“I am not letting all of my other responsibilities distract from my riding,” said White, who will depart from Ottawa for Spain, where he will compete as a member of the Canadian Equestrian Team in events in Gijon and Barcelona. The horses he will ride in Spain, including his top mount, Celena Z, are currently resting in preparation for the trip. “I may not have my top horses with me, but I am still here to compete and I will be hard to beat!”

And White did prove tough to beat in the 1.35m competition, relegating two of the biggest names in show jumping, Henselwood and Millar, to second and third. White also placed fourth riding Chanel, ahead of fifth place finisher, New Zealand Olympian Sharn Wordley.

Of competing against big names such as nine-time Olympian Millar, White said, “Ian is someone all of the younger riders look up to. He is a great figure in Canadian sports history, not just in show jumping. But when we’re head to head, it sure feels good to beat him!”

Angela Covert-Lawrence of St. Lazare, QC, also found herself in the winner’s circle after claiming first place with Candidate du Marquet in the 1.25m competition. Lawrence was double clear and had the fastest time in the jump-off by almost three seconds to claim victory for owner Emmanuelle Bolduc. Candidate du Marquet is an eight-year-old grey Belgian Warmblood mare that Covert-Lawrence began riding this past winter.

“I competed today as a warm-up for the Jump Canada Young Horse competition on Friday, so winning was such a great bonus,” said Lawrence. “She is so consistent, and she excels at everything I ask her to do. In fact, I could not ask for anything more from an eight-year-old.”

Of the National Capital Show Jumping Tournament venue and location, Covert-Lawrence said, “My horse loves the big grass ring at this venue. It’s a huge field here, and she just gets better the more she has to gallop. There are very few grass rings left to compete on in North America, and with all the natural obstacles, coming to Ottawa for this show is really special. The Hayes family has worked hard to create such a wonderful atmosphere. The location is super; you can zip downtown for dinner at night. It could not be more convenient.

“Plus, I love staying at the Brookstreet Hotel and Spa,” added Lawrence, referring the sponsor of the $75,000 Brookstreet Grand Prix on Sunday, August 15, beginning at 2 p.m.

Lawrence and Candidate du Marquet beat out Jonathon Millar, son of Ian Millar, who was also double clear but in a slightly slower time to finish second riding Euro Boy while Alejandro Karolyi of Venezuela took third riding Fanta.

Mario Deslauriers, who was recently named to the United States Equestrian Team for the upcoming 2010 World Equestrian Games, won the 1.40m competition, presented by Juniper Farms. Jill Henselwood rode her 2008 Olympic partner, Special Ed, to second position. Sarah Johnstone of Toronto, ON, finished third riding Starlet while international competitor Roberto Teran of Colombia was fourth riding Distant Star 3E. Henselwood also placed fifth on IV Ever.

Jeff Brandmaier of Guelph, ON, won the 1.20m Junior/Amateur competition, open only to non-professional athletes, with a double clear performance and the fastest jump-off time by almost three seconds. Runner-up Sarah Lottis was also double clear but in a slightly slower time while Jacklynn Carey placed third.

The two-week National Capital Show Jumping Tournament takes place from August 11-15 and 18-22 at the Nepean National Equestrian Park, conveniently located at the 417 Queensway and Moodie Drive. The first week of competition, running August 11-15, is highlighted by Sunday’s $75,000 Brookstreet Grand Prix beginning at 2 p.m. Other featured events include Friday’s $10,000 Open Welcome, the Saturday’s $10,000 Modified Grand Prix, and $5,000 Jump Canada Hunter Derby.

Opening Day at the National Capital Show Jumping Tournament

Ottawa, Ontario – International show jumping competition got underway in the Nation’s Capital as the CSI2* National Capital Show Jumping Tournament opened on Wednesday, August 11, at the National Nepean Equestrian Park in Ottawa, ON.

This year’s event will see two international tournaments held back to back, August 11-15 and August 18-22, capped off with a live concert on Saturday night, August 21, with Canadian recording artists, Blue Rodeo.

A press conference was held to officially open the event, which will see approximately 550 horses competing over the two-week event. The panel of speakers included Sir Terry Matthews, owner of the Brookstreet Hotel; 2008 Olympic Silver Medalist Ian Millar; grand prix competitor Keean White of Angelstone Productions; Jay Hayes, Co-Chair of the National Capital Show Jumping Tournament; and Event Coodinator, Ainsley Hayes.

“What a great event!” raved Matthews, sponsor of the $75,000 Brookstreet Grand Prix on Sunday, August 15, beginning at 2 p.m. “There is great visibility from the Queensway, Ottawa’s major traffic artery. People driving by see the colourful striped tents and wonder, ‘Hey, what’s that?’ It’s all about having a little fun. This is what this event is all about, families in Ottawa having a little fun! It’s wonderful to be here, and to have Brookstreet sponsor this event.”

Angelstone Productions will sponsor the $75,000 Angelstone Productions Grand Prix on Saturday, August 21, beginning at 5:30 p.m. Immediately following the featured show jumping event, the public will be invited on to the grand prix field to enjoy a live intimate performance by Blue Rodeo with special guests, Staggered Crossing. Open to the public, tickets for the Blue Rodeo concert are available at www.CapitalTickets.ca.

“We are so excited to have Blue Rodeo here, not just because it will be a great performance, but also to attract a new crowd to come see the sport of show jumping,” said White of his innovative venture. “We want it to be an event that the whole family can come to and enjoy, to see the horses, enjoy some great entertainment, and have a good time.”

Millar, a nine-time Olympian based nearby in Perth, ON, said, “The location is just perfect; it’s so visible and so accessible. To bring top show jumping to Ottawa, it’s incredible, so close to home! Without the Hayes family’s hard work, this just wouldn’t happen. They are too humble about all the work that they have done.”

Jay Hayes, who Co-Chairs the event with his wife, Shawn, is pleased to bring something new and exciting to the National Capital Show Jumping Tournament in its third consecutive year.

“Keean has come up with a really brilliant idea, to bring a rock group to a sporting event,” Hayes said. “I was traveling back from a competition in the United States and saw that a major league baseball team had decided to bring in a concert event, and I thought, ‘If baseball can do it, why not show jumping?’ We are so looking forward to having Blue Rodeo.”

As for the logistics of the competition itself, staged in a venue that Hayes Co rents for only a few weeks of the year, Hayes noted, “We have had a lot of rain, which has made all of our grass rings look so beautiful, but unfortunately also sometimes causes problems, but I think we have found a solution to the drainage problems for this year.

“We have such a great team of people here, and we could not have done it without them,” he added.

His daughter and Event Coordinator, Ainsley Hayes, commented, “We are so happy to be back. We are off to a great start, everything is running really smoothly, and it was wonderful to wake up to photos of our event on the front page of the Ottawa Citizen! All of the feedback from the community has been amazing. We couldn’t have done it without the help of our sponsors, especially Terry Matthews and Keean White.”

The two-week show jumping tournament will take place from August 11-15 and 18-22 at the Nepean National Equestrian Park, conveniently located at the 417 Queensway and Moodie Drive. The first week of competition, running August 11-15, is highlighted by Sunday’s $75,000 Brookstreet Grand Prix. Other featured events include the $10,000 Open Welcome, the $10,000 Modified Grand Prix, the $5,000 Jump Canada Hunter Derby, the Young Horse Series regional final, and Jump Canada Talent Squad competition. FEI ‘O’ course designer Guilherme Jorge of Brazil will set the tracks throughout the week on the grand prix field, widely considered to be one of the best grass jumping fields in North America.

The second week, August 18-22, will see Catsy Cruz of Mexico taking over course design duties. In addition to Saturday’s $75,000 Angelstone Productions Grand Prix, highlights include the $10,000 CompetitiveJumpers.com Open Welcome on Thursday and Friday’s $15,000 ATCO Derby.

Francois Lamontagne Wins Fifth Annual Ocala Jumping Classic

Ocala, Florida – Canada’s Francois Lamontagne won the $30,000 Ocala Horse Properties LLC Grand Prix, Presented by Brook Ledge, Inc., held Sunday, April 4, at the fifth annual Ocala Jumping Classic in Ocala, FL.

Lamontagne of St-Eustache, QC, was the third and final rider to join the jump-off from a starting field of 26 entries. Riding Paparazzi, Aaron Vale of Morristown, FL, opened the jump-off with a scorching fast round in a time of 38.09 seconds but paid the price with a rail at the final obstacle, a double combination set by course designer Mauricio Garcia.

Michael Kirby of Madison, CT, was next to take up the jump-off challenge riding KT Undercover and although he opted for a more conservative approach, his hopes for victory ended with a fallen rail. Last to go, Lamontagne was clear to claim the win, and $9,000 in prize money, riding Anton, his 10-year-old Belgian Warmblood gelding by Lux Z.

“I had the advantage of being last,” said Lamontagne, 26. “I know Aaron Vale is always fast and hard to beat, but then he had one down in the jump-off. Michael went slow, but he had a rail. Normally, I always go fast in the jump-off and have a rail, so this time I decided to play it safe. I jumped clear and I won.”

Together, Lamontagne and Anton won the eastern division of the Jump Canada Talent Squad Series in 2008. This winter, they successfully competed at the grand prix level at the HITS Ocala circuit before taking a two-week break and returning to competition at the Ocala Jumping Classic, produced by Hayes Co.

“I have had Anton for two and a half years, and we are starting to really know each other and become very competitive,” said Lamontagne. “He’s a clever horse, and very sweet. He is like a toy, like a Barbie horse; he has a head like an Arabian and four white socks. He is a really nice, really gentle horse.”

This year’s Ocala Jumping Classic was held at a new venue, the training center of New Zealand Olympian Sharn Wordley.

“The show grounds were very nice, and the ring had really, really good footing,” said Lamontagne. “It was a very friendly show and since there is only ring, everyone is together and you can talk.”

More than $70,000 in prize money was awarded over the three-day Ocala Jumping Classic, where the grand prix ring featured all-weather Wordley Martin Equestrian footing. Vale and Paparazzi won Saturday’s $10,000 1.40m Modified Grand Prix while four-time Colombian Olympian Manuel Torres riding Chambacunero won the $10,000 1.40m competition presented by Brody Robertson Show Jumps. Another Colombian rider, Roberto Teran, sped to victory on Ferrari in the $5,000 1.30m Modified Grand Prix, Presented by Wordley Martin Equestrian LLC, while Fernando Cardenas riding Quincy Car won the $5,000 1.20m Classic.

“We would like to thank all of the exhibitors, and the great team that works for Hayes Co., who helped make the fifth annual Ocala Jumping Classic a great event, and give special thanks to Sharn Wordley and Beth Goodwin for allowing us to run the show at their facility,” said Ainsley Hayes, Manager of the Ocala Jumping Classic. “It was a great weekend, and we were especially lucky to have perfect weather after a long, cold winter.”

Hayes Co. wishes to acknowledge the generous support of the Ocala Jumping Classic sponsors including Archer Farms, Brody Robertson Show Jumps, Brook Ledge Inc., Equine Waste Recycling, ESI Photography, Golden Hills Golf & Turf Club, Grand Prix/Frantisi, Judy’s Tack Shop, Kimberden, Ocala Horse Properties LLC, Omega Alpha, Point Two, Stalls Etc., The Sanctuary, Waterworks, Wild Horses and Wordley Martin Equestrian LLC.

Ottawa, Ontario— Equine Canada proudly announces that the recipient of the 2009 Equine Canada / Just Add Horses Environment Award is Hayes Co.

The Equine Canada / Just Add Horses Environment Award recognizes a member of Equine Canada who practices and promotes outstanding and environmentally-friendly stewardship practices.
With the inception of the Collingwood Horse Show in 1986, so began Hayes Co.

Comprised of the members of the Hayes show jumping family, Hayes Co. managed the Collingwood Horse Show in Collingwood, ON, for 21 years and currently organizes the National Capital Show Jumping Tournaments in Ottawa, ON, and the Ocala Jumping Classic in Ocala, FL.

At each of these shows Hayes Co. implements a strict recycling program for everything from cans and paper to manure. Arrangements are made in the respective communities to have recyclables picked up for processing, while in the case of the National Capital Classic, a local strawberry farmer was offered free delivery of the show’s accumulated manure for use in his farming initiative.

Hayes Co. also encourages participants and spectators at their shows to follow suit in these environmental practices, demonstrating that if it can be done at a large scale event such as theirs, that surely people can do this at home as well.

“We are very honoured to receive this award because we care about the environment, it is so easy to do and it is an essential way to preserve the land and the environment, which is so precious to us,” said Ainsley Hayes of Hayes Co. “Thank you to Equine Canada and Just Add Horses for recognizing the importance of the environment with this award. We hope that everyone in our equestrian community can continue to do their part.”

This award sees the partnership of Equine Canada and Alex Milne and Associates, the makers of Just Add Horses products, and recognizes a member of Equine Canada who practices and promotes outstanding and environmentally-friendly stewardship practices.

At the Equine Canada Annual Awards Gala, on Saturday February 6, 2010, in Montreal, QC, Ainsley Hayes of Hayes Co. was awarded the 2009 Equine Canada / Just Add Horses Environment Award.

Ottawa, Ontario – Yann Candele of Caledon, ON, edged nine-time Olympian Ian Millar of Perth, ON, to win the $75,000 Brookstreet Grand Prix held Sunday, August 23, to conclude the CSI2* National Capital Show Jumping Tournaments in Ottawa, ON.

Olympic mastermind Leopoldo Palacois of Venezuela built a course that appeared innocuous at first glance, but soon proved to be much tougher than it looked as rails fell time and time again. Of the 29 horses that attempted the track, two were eliminated for refusals while an additional four riders opted to retire, including Millar with his first of two horses, Stedet’s Leroy.

Luckily, Millar had another shot with Redefin and proved that a clear round was possible. Millar’s Olympic Silver Medal teammate, Mac Cone of King City, ON, also produced a clear round with his Olympic horse, Ole, but incurred one time fault after stopping the clock in 93.10 seconds, barely exceeding the 93 second time allowed. Cone, who was celebrating his 57th birthday, finish in third position as only one other rider, Yann Candele, jumped clear to force a jump-off.

As both Millar’s horse, Redefin, and Candele’s mount, Pitareusa, are owned by Susan Grange of Cheltenham, ON, it was going to be a winning day for Grange either way, but the matter of the final placings was still to be decided.

Millar was the first to attempt the shortened jump-off track with Redefin, an 11-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding. When two rails come down, Candele knew exactly what he had to do to. He started out fast enough with Pitareusa, a 12-year-old Dutch Warmblood mare, but when the rails continued to stay in place, Candele slowed down to ensure that he jumped the remaining obstacles clear. The strategy cost Candele one time fault, but the win was his.

“I had a huge advantage because I saw Ian and he had two rails,” said Candele, 38, who formerly rode for his native France before receiving his Canadian citizenship in 2008. “I started out efficiently, and then I slowed down for the last three jumps to make sure that I was clear.”

Millar said his jump-off strategy was, “just to be fast and not put at the rails at risk, but to make it difficult enough for Yann and Pitareusa. It wasn’t speed that caused my trouble in the jump-off. I am really at a bit of a loss as to why we had our problems, but that is horses and that is sport.”

Luck did play a part in Millar’s qualification for the jump-off. In his approach to fence 12, Millar knocked down a rail at the front of the obstacle but as it was not the top rail and the height of the jump was not lowered, Millar was not penalized. Millar noted that over his entire grand prix career, which has spanned more than four decades, that unusual occurrence has happened, at most, half a dozen times.

Candele was surprised that more horses did not advance to the jump-off.

“I was expecting more clear rounds,” said Candele. “The course turned out to be way harder than when we walked it. I thought there would be eight to ten horses clear, and Leopoldo was talking about six.”

While Cone finished third with his one time fault, Candele took fourth place with the fastest four round riding Mustique, yet another horse owned by Grange. Fifth place went to Marie Hecart of France, the winner of Saturday’s $15,000 Modified Grand Prix, who also incurred faults riding Why Not for Ashland Stables.

The second and final week of the National Capital Show Jumping Tournaments was rated a CSI2* by the International Equestrian Federation (FEI), which meant that in addition to substantial prize money, world ranking points were also on the line.

Marie Hecart of France Races to Show Jumping Victory in Ottawa

Ottawa, Ontario – Talk about stacking the odds in your favour. With three horses qualified for the jump-off, that is exactly what Marie Hecart of France did in the $15,000 Modified Grand Prix held Saturday, August 22, at the National Capital Show Jumping Tournaments at the Nepean National Equestrian Park in Ottawa, ON.

Of the 43 horses that competed, 11 were clear to advance to the jump-off. Although three of those horses belonged to Hecart, it only took one to win. Hecart was the first challenger over Leopoldo Palacios’s shortened jump-off track riding Lucas, and the pair set a blistering pace of 38.02 seconds which had the other competitors scratching their heads, wondering how they could catch her.

Erynn Ballard of Hillsburgh, ON, relied on sheer foot speed as she guided the Canadian-bred Rio’s Rhapsody home in a time of 39.17 seconds, but it was only good enough for second place. Yann Candele who, like Hecart, is a native of Normandy, France, tried a unique approach by hopping over a small hedge on his way to the second fence, but his time of 39.29 seconds left him third with Azzaro van’t Hagenhof, a nine-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding owned by Susan Grange.

Hecart tried to out run herself with both Catalina and Ryan Star du Rezidal, but her times of 39.95 and 40.20 left her in fourth and fifth positions respectfully. The only other rider to post a clear round in the jump-off was 18-year-old Sarah Johnstone of Toronto, ON, whose time of 40.38 seconds placed her sixth with Starlet, a 10-year-old Dutch Warmblood mare owned by North Ridge. Johnstone trains with Jay Hayes and his daughter, Lauren. Hayes and his wife, Shawn, are the Co-Chairs of the National Capital Show Jumping Tournaments.

With three horses in the top five, Hecart was more than happy with her results.

“I had three chances so I tried to go as fast as I could and it worked out,” said Hecart, 28.

Even losing a shoe on the jump-off course could not slow down Lucas, a 10-year-old chestnut gelding.

“Lucas is the fastest one,” said Hecart of her three jump-off contenders, all of which are owned by Ashland Stables. “If he is clear in the first round, I know I will be in the top three with him in the jump-off. He is very competitive and really smart. He is not lazy, but he is cool, and when he is in the ring, he is a good competitor.”

Hecart will be one of the favourites for Sunday’s $75,000 Brookstreet Grand Prix at 2 p.m. which concludes the 2009 National Capital Show Jumping Tournaments. Week two of the National Capital Show Jumping Tournaments is rated a CSI2* by the International Equestrian Federation (FEI), which means that in addition to substantial prize money, world ranking points are also on the line.

On Sunday, admission is $10 per person on Sunday, parking included. Children five and under are admitted free. For more information on the National Capital Show Jumping Tournaments, please visit www.hayesco.ca, or call (613) 769-7221.

Hometown Favourite Jonathon Millar Scores Show Jumping Victory

Ottawa, Ontario – The Millar family dominated Friday’s $10,000 CompetitiveJumpers.com Open Welcome with Jonathon Millar of Perth, ON, taking top spot at the National Capital Show Jumping Tournaments at the Nepean National Equestrian Park in Ottawa, ON.

Heavy rains prior to the start of the competition caused a delay and, of the 36 horses entered, only 22 opted to attempt the first round track set in the grass grand prix field by two-time Olympic course designer Leopoldo Palacios of Venezuela. Four successfully mastered the test to advance to the jump-off, and all four were entries from Millar Brooke Farm of Perth, ON. Nine-time Olympian Ian Millar qualified two horses, Redefin and Stedet’s Leroy, while his son, Jonathon, jumped clear with Contino 14. Ottawa’s own Karen Sparks impressed in the first round with Quervo Gold to join her coaches in the jump-off.

First back for the jump-off, Ian Millar, 62, opted for a steady clear with Susan Grange’s Redefin, an 11-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding. The pair left all the rails in place and crossed the timers in 46.30 seconds to set the standard to beat.

Jonathon Millar, 34, was next with Contino 14, a 12-year-old Holsteiner gelding owned by Millar Brooke Farm. The pair tightened their turns and kept up a steady rhythm to stop the timers in 41.54 seconds, almost five seconds faster than the time set by his father.

Sparks took her turn with Quervo Gold, a 16-year-old Belgian Warmblood gelding owned by Brookstreet Stables that she began riding this winter. Although they left all the rails in place, their time of 43.67 seconds was not fast enough to catch Jonathon Millar.

Ian Millar would have the final say with Stedet’s Leroy, a 10-year-old Danish Warmblood gelding owned by DK-USA Sporthorse LLC. When the second fence on course came down, Millar knew he could finish no better than fourth and opted to retire.

“Despite the rain delay, the footing was very good, it drained well and continued to get better and better,” said Jonathon Millar. Noting that all four horses in the jump-off are trained at Millar Brooke Farm, he laughed, “We do so many shows together and it is fun when it works out like this.”

Of his mount, Contino 14, who he began riding this winter, Jonathon Millar said, “Contino is a big horse and he needs to work at being naturally quicker. He needs to learn to run and jump, and he is progressing. This is our last show before Europe, and it is nice that we are on form.”

In September, Jonathon Millar will compete alongside his younger sister, Amy Millar, 32, at a show jumping event in Chantilly, France, followed by a Nations’ Cup team competition in Barcelona, Spain. Amy Millar finished sixth in Friday’s competition riding Romanov and seventh with Costa Rica Z after incurring four faults with both horses.

For runner-up Sparks, placing second in the $10,000 CompetitiveJumpers.com Open Welcome marked her biggest finish to date.

“Quervo Gold has been consistent all year, and today I went for it,” said Sparks, 28. “Quervo Gold is always ready; he just needs me to point him in the right direction. He loves his job and wants to win.”

Sparks will be a hometown favourite when she and Quervo Gold compete in Sunday’s $75,000 Brookstreet Grand Prix at 2 p.m.

Week two of the National Capital Show Jumping Tournaments is rated a CSI2* by the International Equestrian Federation (FEI), which means that in addition to substantial prize money, world ranking points are also on the line. The $15,000 Modified Grand Prix is the featured event on Saturday, August 22, while the National Capital Show Jumping Tournaments concludes with the $75,000 Brookstreet Grand Prix on Sunday, August 23, at 2 p.m.

Competition begins each morning at 8 a.m. and is open to the general public. Admission is $5 per person on Thursdays and Fridays, and $10 per person on Saturdays and Sundays, parking included. Children five and under are admitted free.

Yann Candele Guides Vancouver to Victory in Ottawa

Ottawa, Ontario – Yann Candele of Caledon, ON, rode Vancouver to victory in the 1.35m Jumper competition held Thursday, August 20, at the National Capital Show Jumping Tournaments taking place at the Nepean National Equestrian Park in Ottawa, ON.

With the fastest jump-off time of 30.57 seconds, Candele held off local competitor and 2008 Olympic Team Silver Medalist Jill Henselwood of Oxford Mills, ON. Riding Beau Soleil, an eight-year-old mare for owner Bradon Construction, Henselwood was also clear in the jump-off but could not catch the time set by Candele, instead settling for second place after crossing the timers in 31.86 seconds.

“I did not want to go too fast or too crazy, but I made a lot of tight turns and just tried to carry the rhythm,” said Candele, 38.

A native of Normandy, France, Candele received his Canadian citizenship in 2008. France’s loss was Canada’s gain as Candele helped Canada win the Nations’ Cup team competition in Wellington, FL, in February. Candele competed at last year’s National Capital Show Jumping Tournaments and returned this year with 25 horses.

“I started riding him as a five-year-old, and he’s been developing nicely,” said Candele of his winning mount, Vancouver, a seven-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding owned by Susan Grange. “He’s very competitive, but he is also very laid-back and easy.”

Of the competition, Candele noted, “I think this event is great. The capital of Canada should have a show of this caliber, if not bigger. It should truly be an international show, with the city’s support.”

Beth Underhill of Schomberg, ON, took third and fourth position in the final standings. Riding Tjengo, her nine-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding, Underhill was clear in the jump-off with a time of 34.23 seconds to place third while Viggo, her eight-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding, stopped the clock in 36.87 seconds to finish fourth. Underhill will be a member of Canada’s Nations’ Cup team at the upcoming Spruce Meadows “Masters” Tournament in Calgary, AB.

Current Canadian Show Jumping Champion Keean White, 26, of Rockwood, ON, took fifth place with Bethsabee, an eight-year-old mare that he began riding a few weeks earlier for owner Elm Rock LLC. Despite their quick time of 31.67 seconds, the pair had the second last jump down in the jump-off to place fifth.

Chris Surbey, 22, of Calgary, AB, was the only other rider to advance to the jump-off over the course designed by Leopoldo Palacios of Venezuela, who was the course designer at both the 2000 and 2008 Olympic Games. Riding Loustik de Breuil for owner Paul Bland, Surbey had two fences down in the jump-off for a total of eight faults to finish sixth.

Friday’s featured event is the $10,000 CompetitiveJumpers.com Open Welcome. Candele will have three mounts entered, Mustique, Pitareusa and Game Ready, all owned by Susan Grange.

Week two of the National Capital Show Jumping Tournaments is rated a CSI2* by the International Equestrian Federation (FEI), which means that in addition to substantial prize money, world ranking points are also on the line. World’s Best Come to Ottawa’s National Capital Show Jumping Tournaments

Ottawa, Ontario – Top international show jumping athletes remain in Ottawa for the second and final week of competition in the National Capital Show Jumping Tournaments. With the first week concluded, week two opened on Wednesday, August 19, and runs through Sunday, August 23 at the Nepean National Equestrian Park in Ottawa, ON.

Competitors representing not only Canada, but also Belgium, France, the United States, and Venezuela, have traveled to Ottawa to contest the international show jumping tournament. During the first week of competition, Marie Hecart of France won the $10,000 The Marshes Open Welcome held Friday, August 14, riding Ronaldo. On Saturday, the victory went south of the border when Leslie Howard, Team Gold Medalist at the 1984 Olympic Games and Team Silver Medalist at the 1996 Olympic Games for the United States, guided Lennox Lewis 2 to the win in the $15,000 ATCO Derby.

On Sunday, a showdown between 28-year-old Erynn Ballard of Hillsburgh, ON, and 62-year-old Ian Millar of Perth, ON, in the $25,000 National Capital Show Jumping Tournaments Grand Prix saw Ballard come out on top riding Simply Ahorn. Ballard was the only rider to produce two clear rounds over the testing track designed by Brazil’s Guilherme Jorge, while Millar, a nine-time Olympian and Team Silver Medalist at the 2008 Olympic Games, incurred one time fault riding Stedet’s Leroy.

For week two, two-time Olympic course designer Leopoldo Palacios of Venezuela has taken over designing duties on the grass grand prix field at the Nepean National Equestrian Park, widely considered to be the best in eastern Canada. Three-quarters of Canada’s 2008 Silver Medal Team – Millar, local athlete Jill Henselwood of Oxford Mills, ON, and Mac Cone of King City, ON – are in Ottawa and at the top of their game.

Ballard will be looking to make it two for two in Sunday’s $75,000 Brookstreet Grand Prix, but will face stiff opposition from current Canadian Show Jumping Champion, Keean White of Rockwood, ON, not to mention Amy and Jonathon Millar, who have both inherited their father’s talent for show jumping. Canadian Olympians Jay Hayes of Orangeville, ON, and Beth Underhill of Schomberg, ON, will also be competing.

Week two of the National Capital Show Jumping Tournaments is rated a CSI2* by the International Equestrian Federation (FEI), which means that in addition to substantial prize money, world ranking points are also on the line. Featured events include the $10,000 CompetitiveJumpers.com Open Welcome on Friday, August 21, and the $15,000 Modified Grand Prix on Saturday, August 22. The National Capital Show Jumping Tournaments concludes with the $75,000 Brookstreet Grand Prix on Sunday, August 23, at 2 p.m.

Competition begins each morning at 8 a.m. and is open to the general public. Admission is $5 per person on Thursdays and Fridays, and $10 per person on Saturdays and Sundays, parking included. Children five and under are admitted free.

American Leslie Howard Knocks Out Competition in $15,000 ATCO Derby

Ottawa, Ontario – American Leslie Howard knocked out the competition riding Lennox Lewis 2 to win the $15,000 ATCO Derby held Saturday, August 15, at the National Capital Show Jumping Tournaments in Ottawa, ON.

With 18 horse-rider combinations tackling the challenging course set by world renowned course designer Guilherme Jorge of Brazil, which included the devil’s dyke, the stone wall drop and two gallops down the bank, only three horses were eligible to return for a thrilling jump-off. Two of those horses belonged to American Olympic Team Silver Medalist, Leslie Howard.

France’s Marie Hecart and Lucas, a 10-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding owned by Ashland Stables Inc, were the first pair back in the jump-off. Starting out with a fast gallop and time-saving turns, Hecart stopped the timers in 32.60 seconds and put pressure on Howard, the next rider in the jump-off, to go even quicker in order to win.

With two horses qualified, Howard opted not to jump-off with Raimond W, her 11-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding. With Lennox Lewis 2, Peter Howard’s 10-year-old Oldenburg gelding, Howard expertly blazed through the shortened course, jumping the fences at incredible angles to save time. Howard left all the fences up and set time of 30.98, shaving almost two seconds of Hecart’s time for the win. By withdrawing Raimono W from the jump-off, Howard also automatically finished in third.

“Both my horses were super today, and I could not have asked for more,” said Howard of Westport, CT. “I watched Marie go and I knew that I could not beat her with Raimond, so I just went with Lenox. He is fast like a Ferrari. I knew I had a shot to win and it worked out.”

Taking fourth place with the fastest four fault first round, in a time of 131.15, was Peter Gisborn of Erin, ON, and Sir R. Fifth place went to Cody Auer of Fairfield, CT, riding Timo, a nine-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding, to a four fault round in a time of 132.28 seconds.

Following her victory in the $15,000 ATCO Derby, Howard plans to continue her winning ways in Sunday’s featured event, the $25,000 National Capital Show Jumping Tournaments Grand Prix, with three horses, Lennox Lewis 2, Utah and Hip Hop. The Grand Prix is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.

The National Capital Show Jumping Tournaments hosts its second week of competition from August 19-23. Sanctioned by the International Equestrian Federation (FEI), week two will feature the $10,000 CompetitiveJumpers.com Open Welcome on Friday, August 21. On Saturday evening, August 22, the $15,000 Modified Grand Prix and a BBQ will be held in support of the United Way City of Ottawa Campaign. The National Capital Show Jumping Tournaments concludes with the $75,000 Brookstreet Grand Prix on Sunday, August 23.

Competition begins each morning at 8 a.m. and is open to the general public. Admission is $5 per person on Thursdays and Fridays, and $10 per person on Saturdays and Sundays, parking included, in support of the United Way City of Ottawa Campaign. Children five and under are admitted free.

Erynn Ballard is Simply Unbeatable in $25,000 National Capital Grand Prix

Ottawa, Ontario – Erynn Ballard of Hillsburgh, ON, produced the only faultless performance riding Simply Ahorn to win the $25,000 National Capital Show Jumping Tournaments Grand Prix held Sunday, August 16, in Ottawa, ON.

A total of 34 horse and rider combinations negotiated the course designed by Guilherme Jorge of Brazil with six producing clear rounds to advance to the jump-off. Two riders also jumped clear, but incurred one time fault for exceeding the 87-second time allowed. Ballard riding Sorbette left all the rails in place but stopped the clock in 87.35 seconds to finish seventh while Margie Gayford of Sharon, ON, guided Showgirl to a clear effort in a time of 87.63 seconds to place eighth.

Leslie Howard, a 1984 team gold and 1996 team silver medalist for the United States, opened the jump-off with Utah, an eight-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding owned by The Utah Group. A tight roll back to the Brookledge signature jump cost them a rail, and the pair finished with four faults in a time of 41.59 seconds which would prove to be good enough for fourth place.

Ballard was next in the ring with Simply Ahorn, an eight-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding bred in Canada. The pair produced a clear round in a time of 41.35, setting the standard to beat.

Canadian Team Silver Medalist Mac Cone of King City, ON, was next on to the grass grand prix field with Unanimous, an impressive eight-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding owned by The Unanimous Group. Again, the Brookledge jump came down, and the pair’s conservative time of 45.78 seconds would leave them in sixth position. Ottawa fans were also treated to a performance by Cone’s 2008 Beijing Olympic mount, Ole. The pair had a four-fault performance in the first round to place 11th overall.

France’s Marie Hecart, 28, and Ronaldo were favoured to win following their convincing victory in Friday’s $10,000 The Marshes Open Welcome. However, the Brookledge fence once again ended hopes of a win, and the native of Normandy settled for fifth place.

Howard of Westport, CT, then returned to the ring with Lennox Lewis 2, the 10-year-old Oldenburg gelding she had guided to victory in Saturday’s $15,000 ATCO Derby. Although the pair stopped the clock with the fastest jump-off performance, 40.57 seconds, a fallen rail placed them third.

The crowd was behind the final jump-off challenger, Ian Millar of Perth, ON, aboard Stedet’s Leroy, a 10-year-old Danish Warmblood gelding that he began riding earlier this season. With the advantage of having seen the riders before him, Millar opted for a conservative performance which included a wide turn to the problematic Brookledge fence. Although the rails stayed in the cups, Millar’s slow time of 53.54 seconds cost him one time penalty, and the nine-time Olympian conceded victory to Ballard.

“Leroy is new to this work and he is not what you would call a naturally fast horse,” explained Millar, 62, of his jump-off tactic. “I had two choices. I could slow down and go for the clear round, or I could keep the hammer down and try to be the fastest. Everything went well for Erynn. I wanted to jump it clear, take second, and try again next week.”

Millar collected $5,000 for his second place finish while Ballard rode away with the lion’s share of the prize money, earning $7,500.

“My plan was to go double clear, and he is a naturally fast horse,” said Ballard of Simply Ahorn, her first of four entries in the Grand Prix. “He is a competitive horse, and he is a winner. He is a cocky horse. Every time he goes in the ring, he goes to win – he doesn’t want to be second. He really wants to keep the jumps up, probably more than any other horse I have ever ridden.”

Ballard will be looking to make it two for two in next week’s $75,000 Brookstreet Grand Prix when she saddles up both Simply Ahorn and Sorbette. However, she will face stiff competition as Millar will be bringing out his Olympic Silver Medal mount, In Style. In addition to prize money, next week’s grand prix event, rated a CSI2* by the International Equestrian Federation (FEI), also has world ranking points on the line.
